Ich Bin Ein Bearliner
Berliner-Style Weisse • 3.5% • Wild Oats No. 48Ich Bin Ein Bearliner is tart, very dry, and a sessionable 3.5%, as is typical of the Berliner Weisse style. This pale, unfiltered beer has only a hint of hops, and lively carbonation – in fact, Napoleon and his troops called this beer style the “Champagne of The North.” Ich Bin Ein Bearliner showcases just how lovely sourness can be in the right beer.
History & Style
For Vankleek Hill Oktoberfest 2014 the Beau’s brewers split up into teams, charged with creating the best recipe for the festival. Team “Bad Science” a.k.a. the lab staff created this tip of the hat to the traditional Berliner Weisse style – they fully embrace the irony of purposely inoculating a beer with one of the beer spoilers they spend most days trying to eradicate from the brewery environment! Team Bad Science consists of Bryce McBain, Alex McKinnon and Denise Morin.
Tasting Notes
Oktoberfest goers will have the option of trying this tart beer straight up, or balancing with one of two traditional German syrups for a sweet-n-sour twist: a green woodruff syrup that is lightly grassy and sweet with vanilla notes, or a sweet red raspberry syrup. With multiple ways to enjoy it, it’s like three beers in one!
Food Pairings
Straight-up, pair with weisswurst sausage, smoked trout, or pan-seared scallops; with woodruff syrup, try richer German-style cold cuts like Lyoner sausage; with raspberry syrup, enjoy as an aperitif
