The Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada is inspired by Vankleek Hill local and running enthusiast Ashley Cowan, and her own diagnosis and journey with ovarian cancer. The first-year fundraiser took place in 2015 on a small scale, but grew significantly for the 2016 edition. The total money raised by the Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada to-date is more than $45,058.
A message from Ashley: “It is amazing to see the amount of support there has been for this event, locally in Vankleek Hill, from nurses, friends and runners in Ottawa, and even complete strangers. Every year this event has surpassed my expectations and I want to thank everyone who has donated, participated, and collected donations for it. I hope this has helped to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and that by sharing my story and what to look out for, I have had some part in helping at least one woman get diagnosed earlier.”
What You Need to Know About Ovarian Cancer
If you think you’ve been checked for ovarian cancer, think again. There is no reliable screening test for this disease, no vaccine to prevent it. While all women are at risk of developing ovarian cancer, some are at higher risk than others based on their age, family history, ethnicity and certain genetic mutations. 2,800 Canadian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year.
But there is hope. Events like this one, help further the important work Ovarian Cancer Canada is doing to improve outcomes. This includes providing support and increasing awareness, as well as directly funding research and advocating for increased government investments to affect scientific progress against this disease. About the Event
The 2018 Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada will take place on Saturday, July 7th, rain or shine. Meet up at Beau’s Brewing Co. in Vankleek Hill, ON. The course is an out-and-back on Newton Road, starting from and returning to the brewery.
Cost: $40.00 – 100% of your race fee will be donated!
Beau’s will provide the rest. Enjoy a cold glass of Beau’s beer when you finish and receive a very special Beau’s souvenir item!
Distances: Run 5K, walk 5K or 3K (distances will be marked on the course).
*Please note the route is an unpaved road with loose gravel – choose your footwear on event day with this in mind!
5K run starts at 10:00 AM, sign-in starts at 9:00 AM
3K/5K walk starts at 11:00 AM, sign-in starts at 10:00 AM
Parking: You can park in the parking lot to the right of the brewery, or on the street.
Can dogs attend? We love having dogs at the brewery! That being said, please be aware, for dogs that are uneasy in crowds, the brewery will be very busy that day.
Food: Our kitchen team will be serving food available for purchase on our patio during the day. Food service runs from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Will there be a bag check on site? Sorry, no – please plan to leave valuables with a friend, or locked in your car.
Will the race be timed? Not officially, but you can use your own watch or GPS. We are hoping to add a timing clock at the start/finish line.
Will there be an aid station with water on the course? You bet! It will be located at or very near the turn-around point for the 3K distance.
Can I come out just to cheer? We would love that! Make signs, make some noise, make someone’s day!
What if it rains? Bring an umbrella or wear a hat – sometimes a little bad weather brings out the most fun. This event is rain or shine – it will only be cancelled if weather safety is an issue.
Are kids allowed to run or walk? Sure they are – since our goal is to raise the most amount of money possible for Ovarian Cancer Canada, all participants must pay the $40 if they are walking or running – babies in strollers can ride for free.
