The Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada is inspired by Vankleek Hill’s Ashley Courtois (Cowan), whose friends and family started this race when Ashley was diagnosed with the disease in 2015. The event started small but grew each year during Ashley’s three-year battle with ovarian cancer. We lost Ashley to her cancer in 2018, but we continue the race in honour of her wonderful strength and spirit, and her love of running. The total money raised by the Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada to-date is more than $255,000.
A message from Ashley in 2017: “Every year this event has surpassed my expectations and I want to thank everyone who has donated, participated, and collected donations for it. I hope this has helped to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and that by sharing my story and what to look out for, I have had some part in helping at least one woman get diagnosed earlier.”
If you think you’ve been checked for ovarian cancer, think again. There is no reliable screening test for this disease, no vaccine to prevent it. While all women are at risk of developing ovarian cancer, some are at higher risk than others based on their age, family history, ethnicity and certain genetic mutations. 2,800 Canadian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. But there is hope. Events like this one, help further the important work Ovarian Cancer Canada is doing to improve outcomes. This includes providing support and increasing awareness, as well as directly funding research and advocating for increased government investments to affect scientific progress against this disease. For more information, visit ovariancanada.org.
I’m not able to come, but I want to support the cause. You are awesome. You can absolutely donate to the fundraising or support a friend who has signed up.
Can dogs attend? We love having dogs at the brewery! That being said, please be aware, for dogs that are uneasy in crowds, the brewery will be very busy that day.
Will there be a bag check on site? Sorry, no – please plan to leave valuables with a friend or locked in your car.
Can I come out just to cheer? We would love that! Make signs, make some noise, make someone’s day!
What if it rains? From past race days we have learned that sometimes a little bad weather brings out the most fun! This event is rain or shine – it will only be cancelled if weather safety is an issue. Bring an umbrella and/or wear a hat. Bug spray and sunscreen are also highly recommended! We have tented part of the parking lot, and the brewery is open at full capacity again.
Are kids allowed to run or walk? Sure they are – since our goal is to raise the most amount of money possible for Ovarian Cancer Canada, so we would ask that all participants, including kids, donate their $40 if they are walking or running – babies in strollers can ride for free. Those under 19 years of age can choose a non-alcoholic drink from our taproom if they are attending in person. We cannot mail alcohol to anyone under 19 years of age.
The 2022 Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada will take place on Saturday, June 25th, rain or shine. We are bursting with excitement to host this fundraising event in person at the brewery for the first time since 2019. We can’t wait to see all you all again at the starting line, and raising a glass afterwards to honour all the courageous women whose lives have been touched by ovarian cancer.
The Beau’s 5K is a walk or run event, with distances of 3K, 5K or 10K. Registration is fully tax-deductible, and you will be treated to a complimentary glass of Lug Tread when you finish. Registration opens May 11. Don’t delay, as the first 250 sign ups will receive a special 2022 Beau’s 5K souvenir glass!
Not able to make it to the brewery on race day? No worries, you can participate virtually from your own neighbourhood or home. And of course, we still want you to enjoy a cold glass of Beau’s beer when you finish – see details below on having your race kit mailed to you (available in Ontario only).
Entry fee is a $40 tax-deductible donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada. In person participants will be limited to 500 for everyone’s safety. Registering online early is strongly encouraged, so you have extra time to raise some pledge funds from friends and family. If you are running with your workplace or in honour of a friend or family member, you can register and fundraise as a team!
Race kits can be picked up from the brewery beginning Friday June 24 after 3 PM.
The 3K and 5K course is an out-and-back on Newton Road, starting from and returning to the brewery. The road is a scenic rural route, a gravel road past farms and homes in Vankleek Hill. The course is basically flat, save a small hill at the finish line. Consider it your final challenge to get that finisher’s beer. The 10K course is simply a double out-and-back, for those who want the extra challenge.
Walkers and runners will be in both heats, we ask runners to come to the front and the walkers towards the back to help everyone off to a smooth and safe start. On the course, marshalls will remind all participants to stay to the right.
The race is not timed, but distances are marked on the course. A hydration station is located at 1.5K. Again, please note the route is an unpaved road with loose gravel – choose your footwear on event day with this in mind!
