The Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada is inspired by Vankleek Hill’s Ashley Courtois (Cowan), whose friends and family started this race when Ashley was diagnosed with the disease in 2015. The event started small but grew each year during Ashley’s three-year battle with ovarian cancer. We lost Ashley to her cancer in 2018, but we continue the race in honour of her wonderful strength and spirit, and her love of running. The total money raised by the Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada to-date is more than $205,000.
A message from Ashley in 2017: “Every year this event has surpassed my expectations and I want to thank everyone who has donated, participated, and collected donations for it. I hope this has helped to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and that by sharing my story and what to look out for, I have had some part in helping at least one woman get diagnosed earlier.”
If you think you’ve been checked for ovarian cancer, think again. There is no reliable screening test for this disease, no vaccine to prevent it. While all women are at risk of developing ovarian cancer, some are at higher risk than others based on their age, family history, ethnicity and certain genetic mutations. 2,800 Canadian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. But there is hope. Events like this one, help further the important work Ovarian Cancer Canada is doing to improve outcomes. This includes providing support and increasing awareness, as well as directly funding research and advocating for increased government investments to affect scientific progress against this disease. I’m not able to walk or run, but I want to support the cause. You are awesome. You can absolutely donate to the fundraising or support a friend who has signed up. Click here.
What if it rains? Keep an eye on the forecast and if it looks better to walk or run on another day, go for it.
Is there a Facebook Event Page I can join? Check out the Facebook page here!
Can my business help support or participate in the race? Yes! We are looking for prize donations, and there are opportunities to promote your business in exchange for supporting our cause. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire.
The 2021 Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada will take place on Saturday, July 3rd. Since we expect to still have social distancing requirements in place on race day, we are planning for a “virtual walk/run.” This means instead of coming to the brewery, we want you to run or walk your 3K, 5K and 10K distances safely, in your own neighbourhood or home. We’ll miss seeing all your faces this year, but we have plans to make this year’s event fantastic, even if it’s not in person. And of course, we still want you to enjoy a cold glass of Beau’s beer when you finish!
Entry fee is a $40 tax-deductible donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada. As an upside this year, we can have unlimited participants! Registering online early is still strongly encouraged, so you have extra time to raise some pledge funds from friends and family. Registered participants will receive an email when race kits become available. If you are running with your workplace or in honour of a friend or family member, you can register and fundraise as a team!
Beau’s 5K race kits are now available for pick-up at the brewery! To arrange pick up, go to our online store at beaus.ca, and place your race kit in the shopping cart along with your beer order.** Select “pick up at brewery” and your order will be ready at the brewery the next business day after 2 pm.
We’ll know better closer to race day where you’ll be allowed to walk or run, but we are hopeful that by July 3rd we’ll be able to get out to our local parks, neighbourhoods, trails, etc.
You can walk or run your distance any time the morning of July 3rd – honestly, do it July 2nd if the weather looks better so long as you get those steps in! We just ask that you get your fundraising total dollars inputted by noon so we can calculate it into the total raised for this event. At 1 PM we will do our annual announcement of total funds raised via a livestream on social media. We’ll get you all the details on how to watch the feed the week before the race.
