Jameson® Irish Whiskey casks lend accents of wood and warmth to Beau’s Strong Patrick

Luscious and malty, the 2018 edition of Beau’s strong Irish-style red ale is available now in Ontario and Québec; coming soon to Manitoba

Beau’s Brewing Co. has brewed a 2018 edition of Strong Patrick Irish-style red ale, which is available now in Ontario and Québec, and coming soon to Manitoba. This year’s incarnation of the returning fan favourite from Beau’s has been given an extra-special touch of authenticity, as a portion of each batch has been aged in Jameson® Irish Whiskey casks. The partial aging blends in rich accents of wood and warmth to the classic beer style from the Emerald Isle.

Strong Patrick was first brewed by Beau’s in 2012 for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and has since become a returning seasonal beer. At 6.7 % it is stronger than a typical rendition of an Irish-style red, and is luscious and malty. The ale pours brilliant red with a creamy head. The red hue is a result of the addition of organic roasted barley to the recipe, which also includes Pilgrim hops and Irish ale yeast. Its aroma conjures notes of caramel, whiskey, oak, and malts. It has a malty backbone, with a touch of toasty caramel and vanilla, and a mild bitterness to round and balance. It finishes rich and warm.

Beau’s Brewmaster Matt O’Hara says that working with Jameson® casks for Strong Patrick felt like “a kind of homecoming.” He notes: “Since Strong Patrick’s inception, having the barrel-aged portion reside in Irish whiskey seemed like the ultimate destination to really make good on the dream. I feel like the synergy of the beer and the character of the Jameson® casks is really a special elevation of what we created, and our most ideal version of the beer to date.”

Beau’s co-founder Steve Beauchesne is also pleased with the results of the project. “Authenticity is a craft brewer’s stock-in-trade. By working with Jameson® to create our Strong Patrick beer this year, we are not just making a tastier beer, but we are creating an authentic Irish experience for our fans.” Beauchesne also hints that a future extension of the relationship between Beau’s and Jameson® may be on the horizon: Jameson® Caskmates features whiskey that has been aged in beer-seasoned casks.

Strong Patrick is a limited release from Beau’s Wild Oats Series, available now in Ontario and Québec, and coming in March to Manitoba. It can by purchased by the bottle at provincial retailers of craft beer, or by the glass at craft-friendly restaurants and pubs in those provinces. It can also be found at the Vankleek Hill brewery, or purchased online at lcbo.ca (in Ontario) or bybo.ca (City of Ottawa). It will also feature in the festivities at Beau’s St. Pat’s Party, which will take place March 10 in Ottawa (www.stpatricksparty.ca).
