Episode 4: Diversity and Disruption

Episode 4: Lagered Tales, presented by Beau’s. Featuring holiday gift ideas, diversity in beer, and how we helped change a law in Ontario.

Lagered Tales episode 4

In the fourth episode of Lagered Tales our co-founder and CEO at Beau’s, Steve Beauchesne, talks to Ren Navarro, founder of Beer.Diversity about her work addressing the lack of diversity in the Canadian craft beer industry. Their discussion touches upon topics such as race, gender, representation, outdated tropes in beer marketing, and more.

The interview took place at the 2018 Ontario Craft Brewers Conference in Toronto, and in it Ren and Steve refer to a panel discussion, Building Diversity and Inclusion in Ontario Craft Brewing, which featured Ren, Tej Sandhu from Merit Brewing, and Travis Persaud from Collective Arts Brewing. The session was conducted by Beau’s events manager, Marybeth McLaughlin.

In the episode’s second feature, one of our producers, Patrick, sits down with Operation Come Home’s executive director, Elspeth McKay, and Steve (separately) as they each recount the (exciting) story of having a law changed in Ontario in 2011, in the name of social enterprise!

Operation Come Home is an Ottawa-based charitable organization that assists homeless and street-affected youth. Among its social enterprises are BottleWorks, which employs young people collecting bottles, and BYBO, which employs youth delivering Beau’s beer in the Ottawa area.

Here is the web page (with testimonials from some of the 16 youth employed by BYBO) mentioned in the segment: BYBO at OCH, and here is Steve’s 2011 blog post, The Grinch Who Stole Your Christmas Beer, as found on his blog, How To Start A Brewery (In One Million Easy Steps).

In our third feature, Eddy Earwigg sits down with Louise Sproule, the editor and publisher of The Review, a local newspaper in Vankleek Hill. They discuss the challenges of being the first female publisher at a small-town paper, how Vankleek Hill has changed since Beau’s arrived, and much more — expect the unexpected. Eddy and Louise have a rapport like few others.

Finally, Steve joins the Toronto-based writer and beer expert Crystal Luxmore to discuss her favourite holiday beers. They do a parallel tasting of Fuller’s Vintage Ale (2012 and 2018 editions), and they try Crystal’s holiday gifting go-to, Beau’s New Lang Syne. Crystal also gives some cellaring tips for aging craft beer.
