Beau’s releasing “De Berry’s Treasure” black raspberry & rhubarb gose

Beau’s Brewing Co. is announcing the release of its latest Wild Oats Series beer, De Berry’s Treasure, a refreshing gose brewed with organic black raspberries and organic rhubarb. It will be available in bottles and on tap later this month in Ontario and Québec, as well as in bottles in Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia later this summer.

De Berry’s Treasure is named for the 17th century pirate captain Charlotte de Berry. A pilot batch of it was brewed by a small team of women at Beau’s for a “Women of Beer” event hosted by the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies in the summer of 2016. De Berry’s Treasure proved to be popular with attendees, a moment that Beau’s brewer Alyssa Kwasny, who helped create the beer, remembers fondly.

“For some of us, it was the first recipe we had ever worked on,” she recalls. “Knowing that it was for an event meant to bring women in the industry together made it even more special. It was cool to see the whole process come full-circle, and to see people finally enjoying the beer at the event was a special moment,” she adds. Following the event, the team at Beau’s jumped at the opportunity to give De Berry’s Treasure a wide-scale release as part of the Wild Oats Series.

Brainstorming potential recipe ideas for De Berry’s Treasure, the brewers were inspired to combine two locally available summer ingredients: black raspberries and rhubarb. “Black raspberries are sweet like red raspberries, but they’re a little tart, and bolder in flavour,” explains Kwasny. As for the rhubarb, “its mild acidity pairs well with the tartness of black raspberries,” she notes. “It’s an interesting combination that we’d never tried before.” The fruits were also chosen to suit a gose, a German style of beer to which mild saltiness is typically attributed. The salt helps preserve and accentuate the fruit flavours in the beer, even when their sugars have largely fermented out during brewing.

De Berry’s Treasure pours bright alizarin with white foam and a slight haze. The aroma is fruity, combining berry and rhubarb notes. This light-bodied beer has tangy flavour, and the finish is clean with a subtle salt linger. De Berry’s Treasure is a part of the Beau’s Wild Oats Series, a series dedicated to exploring the bold flavours and exciting aromas of adventurous styles of beer.

De Berry’s Treasure is a sessionable 4.5 % ABV, is 10 IBUs, and is best served in a goblet-style glass at 3-6 C. The Beau’s kitchen team recommends pairing De Berry’s Treasure with a shaved rhubarb salad topped with almonds and fresh goat cheese, slow roasted and barbecue grilled pork hocks, and strawberry rhubarb turnovers.

De Berry’s Treasure will be available in bottles and on tap in Ontario and Québec, and in bottles in Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. De Berry’s Treasure can also be purchased directly from the brewery beginning on June 21, through BYBO.ca for home delivery in Ottawa, and for home delivery anywhere in Ontario via LCBO.com.
