Three limited-edition beers to commemorate Beau’s 10th Birthday

Beau’s is releasing three distinctive new beers on July 2, celebrating 10 years as a local craft brewery: in addition to “Batch 5000,” a.k.a. the official five-thousandth batch of beer brewed by Beau’s, two new collaborative beers made with Kissmeyer Beer and Gigantic Brewing will also be released. The bottles, which feature limited-edition labels, will be available directly from the brewery, for home delivery in Ottawa through BYBO (www.bybo.ca) and at select craft-friendly retailers in Québec.

Batch 5000 is a wild Ontario farmhouse ale, made with Ontario wheat, Ontario-grown hops, and fermented with Ontario wild yeast from Escarpment Labs in Guelph. The aroma is tropical, with a backdrop of earthy barnyard and red wine barrel. The flavour impressions are peppery, with mild heat. The finish is tannic and dry, with lingering spice. As noted, it marks Beau’s five-thousandth batch of beer.

Beau’s teamed up with Denmark’s gypsy brewer Anders Kissmeyer of Kissmeyer Beer to create Old Skål, a fruit-infused, barrel-aged and bottle-conditioned oud bruin. Dates, maple syrup, and a residency in pinot noir barrels have added complexity to this collaborative creation, brewed during Beau’s Oktoberfest in 2012 and aged for 40 months. True to style the flavour is tart, with tannic cherry notes and a hint of hazelnut.

“Two Tonnes of Fun” was brewed with Portland’s Gigantic Brewing in October 2015 at Beau’s. It’s a 10.5% long-boil American barleywine, made with two tonnes of pale ale malt, and subjected to eight hours of boil time, instead of the typical 60-90 minutes. The result is a full-bodied, luxuriant barleywine that exhibits flavours reminiscent of figgy pudding. “The long-boil method is the traditional way that British brewers used to make barleywine,” explains Beau’s brewmaster Matthew O’Hara, who worked on the recipe with the team from Gigantic. “The technique increases the Maillard reaction taking place in the boil, transforming the wort from its original golden hue to a deep copper. It also intensifies the treacle-like and caramel flavours in the beer.”

Tim and Steve Beauchesne, along with family and friends, will tap these beers on July 2 during Beau’s 10th birthday party at the brewery in Vankleek Hill. All three birthday beers will be available for purchase by the glass and by the bottle that day, along with new citrus + sea salt gruits “Buenos Dias” and “Buenas Noches,” and a re-release of fan-favourite Wag the Wolf.

Round-trip buses for out-of-town guests are available from Ottawa and Montréal.
